USS Essex on maneuvers with USS Hotspur as part of 'Operation Tacit Shield' - Stardate 51167.3

Essex fires her main phase cannon in anger - Stardate 51124.6

The Essex was the first Defiant Class starship to enter service with SFC and like her sisters is a compact, tough fighting ship. Named for the Daedalus Class vessel that was lost in 2167, she was 'adopted' by the region of Earth whose name she bears.

Although originally designed for combat (in particular against the Borg), the primary mission of the Essex is to maintain peace - unfortunately, sometimes that peace needs to be won by force of arms and Essex is equipped to face any foe. Like the United Nations 'Peacekeepers' of the late 20th and early 21st Centuries, she is a visible deterant capable to taking the fight to the enemy with the decisive force to win any engagement.

In addition to afearsome weapons array, featuring pulse phaser cannon, both photon and quantum torpedoes and a 'grey' cloaking device acquired from the Romulans, sheboasts an overpowered warp drive - enabling her to outrun any vessel in the Fleet in short bursts or maintain a cruising speed rated two full warp factors above the standard Defiant class design specification.

Reflecting her heavy ordnance load-out and her robust construction, interior comforts are few and far between - and made even sparser by Essex secondary mission as a short range Science and Exploratory vessel, which has made necessary even more interior changes.

The USS Essex was formally commissioned as an SFC Unit in February 1999 and from the beginning, she has had big ideas as she lives up to her motto: “Ex parvum multum” – 'from little much'

Her many awards to date include: Unit of the Year in 2000 and again in 2001 with an Honourable Mention in 2002, Starbase Apollo Awards in 2001 and 2002 and a number of Departmental awards, including the prestigious Montgomerry Scott Award for Engineering Excellence.

At the end of 2001, the motto was amended slightly to read: “Ex parvum multum – Lege at lacrimare”... Rough translation? 'From little much – read it and weep!'

The Essex prides herself on being an active Unit - In addition to weekly meetings held in Southend, featuring quizzes, role playing, war gaming and project work, to name just a few of the activities, the Crew get together most weekends to attend conventions, signings, memorabilia shows and project workshops. They also hold a number of Annual Events including “Camp Essex” – a weekend camping trip in July and the infamous USS Essex BBQ and water pistol fight each August.
